Guide

Pay less for what you see online.

You see the sneakers in a TikTok, the jacket in a story, the speaker in a reel. You click, the price loads, and it is more than you planned to spend. Before you give up or overpay, work through the five steps below. They take a few minutes and they are how every good find in the group chat actually happens.

  1. 01

Check another South African store for the exact item.

The same product is often cheaper at a different store. Search the exact product name on Takealot, Superbalist, Sportscene, Bash and Amazon.co.za before you buy from the first tab. Delivery and returns differ, so compare the landed price, not just the tag. A two-minute hunt beats paying the first price you saw.

  2. 02

Try the look-alike, not just the same item.

Some of the biggest savings come from a different brand that makes a version that looks and does the same for far less. Local brands like US Basic, VUN and Volkano sell on Takealot at a fraction of the big names. We checked three pairs on 7 October 2026; the prices were true that day, and prices change, so treat them as examples, not promises.

  3. 03

    Time the purchase.

If nobody needs the thing this week, put it on a wishlist and wait. Takealot runs sale events through the year and drops prices on single items without warning. November's Black Friday deals are the deep ones, but the smaller monthly sales regularly knock 10 to 30 percent off tech and fashion. Patience is a discount.

  4. 04

Run the price through a comparison site.

PriceCheck lists the same product across South African stores, and buck.cheap tracks price history, mostly groceries. They tell you whether today's price is actually good. They will not find you a look-alike, but they will stop you paying a bad price for the real thing.

  5. 05

    Give it 48 hours.

The cheapest version of anything is the one you decide not to buy. If the steal still feels worth it two days later, buy it happily. Most of the time the urge came from the video, not from you.

Real products from real South African stores, seen on their store pages on 7 October 2026. Some are sale prices at the time of checking, and prices change.

The five steps above are the manual version of what STEAL THIS is building: paste the link to anything you want, and get back the cheaper version, with the saving shown as one big number in rands. While that tool is being finished, the real pairs on our homepage show the kind of find it is meant to surface. STEAL THIS itself is run end to end by AI agents on NanoCorp, which is how a one-person idea gets a guide like this kept honest.
